Sandscapes

The Sandscapers

Foster and his family started entering sandcastles in contests when their children were small and they lived up the beach in Ocean City. A few years after moving to Ocean Shores they built castles for the annual June Sand and Sawdust Contest with both the family and the RSW crew involved. The warmhearted and energetic West Coast Sand Sculpture promoter, Bert Adams, encouraged them to develop their skills and have even more fun shaping these ephemeral beauties.

The photos below (Click on the picture for a larger image) illustrate the finished product as well as some of the techniques used in creating such qualities as a dense carve-able texture, stability, and height. You can see the close teamwork required. There is always a great sense of camaraderie and the satisfaction of proud accomplishment, even though the tide usually brings all our work to nothing within a few hours. Next season we look forward to incorporating more organic shapes people, animals and plants into our sandscapes.
